Free Printable Alphabet Activity Worksheets for Preschoolers

Home is where learning starts. It is where we teach our kids their first ABC’s and 123’s. Here are free printable alphabet worksheets for your curious and early learners.

As a full time stay-at-home mom, I think of activities that will occupy the daily schedule of my kids. Since I have 2 toddlers on my watch, it is my mommy duty to keep them busy and entertained. But just keeping them busy is not enough. It is also my responsibility to teach them.

I started teaching my firstborn his alphabet, numbers, shapes and colors when he was 2. I did all his worksheets manually on paper. By 3 years old, he can write his alphabet and count to 100. And by 4, he started to read.

I wanted to give the same dedication to my other 2 boys. Maybe not as focused as when we only had one child; but teaching my kids is a responsibility I want to keep. I enjoy doing it. It also becomes our bonding activity.

My materials have improved though. With my firstborn, I used to write and draw the materials by hand. Thanks to technology, I can simply lay-out, download, then print. I insert the materials on clear sheets and use dry erase markers for multiple use.

Why do I make my own alphabet worksheets and not just download on google? Because I know the needs of my kids. When toddlers and preschoolers are just starting to write, their hands are clumsy. They need bigger and colorful texts to encourage them to learn. To prepare them for bigger learning tasks, they need to start small.

Uppercase And Lowercase Letters

Should your child learn the uppercase or lowercase letters first? My answer actually depends on your intention.

I personally start with the capital letters first. While lowercase letters require less strokes, capital letters are easier to write and to remember. They are mostly straight lines with exact points to begin and end. Since preschoolers have less control of their hands, simple strokes will be a lot easier for them. Also, we introduce capital letters when we teach our kids how to spell out their names.

Whatever you decide to introduce first, it is important to teach uppercase letters alongside lowercase letters. Make the kids familiar with their alphabet with these matching uppercase and lowercase letters worksheets.

Beginning Letter Sound

Aside from reading to your children, another way to teach letter sound is through picture books. Emphasize the beginning letter sound while pointing to the illustration. Here are picture activity worksheets to help you teach the sounds of the letters.

Alphabet Tracing Worksheets

When I was looking for alphabet tracing worksheets for my toddler, the texts are usually small and crowded. I tried several times to sit him down but we can’t go past the letter “B”. This is why I made a tracing sheet with bigger texts to better guide his little hands.

SUMMARY

When your toddler or preschooler wants a sit-down reading time or points to letters and numbers, it is a signal that he is hungry for information. Support your kids’ interest in learning. I know as a mom there is already so much on our plate. Teaching our kids requires time and dedication. But no amount of teaching can compare to the influence we give to our children.

  1. I like the idea of creating your own alphabetical printables because you know what your kids want. And what kind of learning materials is important for their learning. I really like your style; your kids are lucky to have you.

  2. Such a cute resource for parents and I love that it’s free! As a preschool and kindergarten teacher, I second starting to learn to write with capital letters, they are definitely easier for kids to form. However, I’ve seen the importance of teaching how to form the letters in your child’s name correctly as it is difficult to correct once they write it so often. This will help eliminate reversals and sloppy writing of this letter later.
